The Batwa were the original inhabitants of the forests before Mgahinga and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park were gazetted into National Parks in 1991. In creating and gazetting the park “Mgahinga Gorilla National Park”, these people were forced out of the park and rehabilitated in the villages that surround the park.
The Batwa community walk is a living museum where you can learn about the Batwa pygmoid tribe of People. These people used to live in the Mgahinga National Park doing hunting, fruit-gathering and were fierce warriors. They depended on the forest for shelter, food and medicine to heal them and survive on.
During the walk, you will learn about the different plants and roots that the Batwa used as medicine to stop bleeding after child delivery, herbs for malaria, blood pressure and other ailments/ diseases. For example the black cover of ant nests were used for treating skin fungal infections. You will be surprised to see a real pharmacy in an environment that has no sense of civilization.
You will then return back to the lodge for dinner and rest till the following day.
